Keep It Unreal with LomoAmigo Mr. Scruff

2

DJ, musician and chronic doodler Mr. Scruff has a brand new album out, entitled Friendly Bacteria. He is currently on tour to promote the album. Luckily, we caught up with him while on tour and gave him an LC-A+ to capture the action. Say a big hello to Mr. Scruff!

Hello Mr. Scruff! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a DJ, producer, doodler, husband & father. I work hard & love what I do.

Where did your interest in DJ-ing and writing music begin?

In the early 1980s inspired by John Peel, 2 tone, ska & electro. I started off as a bedroom DJ & then started buying synths & drum machines.

What have you been up to in the last year?

Getting the ‘Friendly Bacteria’ album finished and then keeping busy with gigs & interviews. It is all calming down a bit now though, which is a relief!

You are also an illustrator and your characters are heavily featured on your album sleeves. Do the two relate in some way?

They both come from my warped mind, so they must have something in common. They both share a sense of mischief & fun, and they do compliment each other.

What did you shoot for us on the LC-A+?

I used an LC-A+ to take lots of pictures (mostly double exposures) on the road while touring. Lots of skies, views from buses & trains, and overlaid textures. My 3-year-old took a few too, which will probably be better than mine, to be honest.

If your photos had a soundtrack what would it be?

  • Green Velvet – ‘Flash’
  • Double Exposure – ‘Ten Percent’
  • Cinematic Orchestra – ‘The Man With The Movie Camera’
  • The Techniques – ‘Travelling man’
  • Masters at Work – ‘I Can’t Get No Sleep’

How does one “keep it unreal”?

By doing what you believe in, with a helping of humour.

What does the future hold for Mr Scruff?

Not a career as a professional photographer, I can tell you! Studio, gigs, festivals, a small amount of sleep, and hopefully a bit of a family holiday. And more sleep.

Thanks for the chat, Mr Scruff! Check out his new album Friendly Bacteria here.

Mr Scruff is an absolute legend! My girlfriend and I met at one of his gigs 10 years ago and when we had our first child my sister asked him to send us a congratulations card. He sent us a hand drawn cartoon card. Very special lovely guy.
