Ruth Nitkiewicz is a film photography fanatic living in London. We lent her a Lomo’Instant camera and asked her a few questions about the joys of instant photography.

Hello! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a librarian originally from Australia, but now living in London. I play drums with my band and I like to dabble in analogue photography.

How did you get on with the Lomo’Instant?

It was a perfect match. I love that it had a multiple exposure function and different lenses to play with, especially the close-up lens which I used for taking pictures of flowers. For a little camera there are endless possibilities for experimenting.

What are the benefits of instant and, in your opinion, why is it so popular right now?

Instant film is great because of the physical factor – you can see your pictures developing before your eyes and you can hold on to them as little mementos. I think their popularity is increasing because we still want to have physical photographs and it’s convenient to have a camera that can produce them, without having to go to a lab or print shop.

Any tips on shooting with this camera?

Embrace the Lomography philosophy and don’t be afraid of experimenting with a few different settings. I especially liked using bulb mode for long exposures, which helped me capture some crazy pictures of fireworks on Bonfire Night. I had no idea how it would work out, so it was fun seeing the pictures emerge as they were developing. That’s the beauty of instant!

Thanks for taking part Ruth!
