There are so many exciting things you can do with the Lomo’Instant camera, it’s hard to know where to start! We’ve been giving this lovable Lomo camera the full test drive so that you can experience its full potential in an instant! Here are some top tips on shooting very long exposures in dark places.

I tested the long exposure capabilities of the Lomo’Instant in an underground reservoir. Here are the results, and a few tips as to how I took them.

1. Tripod + Cable Release – Possibly my favourite part of the camera design was the cable release port, and the ability to mount it on a tripod. This eliminates any camera shake, and gives you the freedom to run around waving your torch about.

2. Big bright torch – Don’t let low light or pitch black situations put you off taking photos. Bring a torch and light paint the scene. Instant sunshine!

3. Bulb mode (B) – To make sure your torch light gets to the film, lock the camera into Bulb mode. It can be hard to judge how long to leave the shutter open for, but you can use any of the free light meter smartphone applications available, or do test shots for different amounts of time.

4. Refreshments – Some of the exposures were around 5 minutes long whilst I walked around with the torch lighting it up. Bring a little drink to help pass the time.
