LomoAmigos: Lily and Madeleine

Lily & Madeleine are sisters from Indianapolis who have charmed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with their heavenly harmonies. They are just about to release their new album titled “Fumes.” Lomography caught up with them on a recent trip to the United Kingdom and gave them each a La Sardina camera to shoot with. Meet them after the jump.

Hello Lily and Madeleine Tell us a bit about yourselves.

M: We’re sisters from the Midwest region of the US and we love music, coffee, cats, and our mom’s scones.

What inspires you to write music?

M: I’m mostly inspired by experiences that I’ve been through and also the experiences of people around me. I use music as kind of a diary or a lot of my lyrics come from my diary. It can be difficult to fit my feelings into a three-minute song, but that’s what’s fun about the process.
L: I’m most inspired when I have some sort of strong idea or feeling. I agree with Madge that it’s kinda like a journal for me.

What advice would you give to other budding musicians who want to make in in the music industry?

M: Be passionate about your work and believe in yourself.
L: Be yourself and don’t get caught up in criticism.

How was it shooting with the La Sardinas?

M: They were great! It was our first time using real film and it was surprisingly satisfying to use!
L: It was so cool! I always like taking pictures on tour just with my iPhone and with the La Sardina cameras it felt way more fun.

What is it that you like about analogue photography?

M: I like that analogue photography limits you to a certain number of pictures per roll of film. It makes the process of taking each picture special and meaningful.
L: Totally. I also like that you really don’t know what your pictures look like until you develop them. I’m so used to instant gratification these days and using analogue photography made me feel like I was capturing moments more than capturing images.

If your photos could have a soundtrack, what would it be? (5 songs, title and artist please)

Granmarais- The Wild Family
The Motherlode- The Staves
Land of the Bloody Unknown- The Middle East
Hiding Tonight- Alex Turner
Don’t Tell Your Parents- We Are Twin

What’s coming up in the future?

M: We’re excited to release our next album this fall and we’re planning a big US and European tour this November!

Lily and Madeleine’s new album “Fumes” will be released on October 27 and is available for purchase on iTunes.
