Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m split between London and the south coast where I run a start-up telegram company. I’m a musician, and maybe a romantic. I’d like to play chess better, and read more.

When and where did your love for film photography start?

It started when I got my first Polaroid camera in the early 2000s. The idea that the camera captures more than just the reality, that it has its own character I found fascinating. I still have a trusty SX-70 in my collection, I find new things it can do all the time!

What are your favourite cameras and why?

It’d have to be the LC-A. The way it handles light is just beautiful, and its simplicity is always a pleasure to work with. The Diana Mini is also an important camera for me, there’s something about the way it feels that makes me want to leap into its world. It has such an overwhelming aesthetic that it’s hard not to fall in love with it!

Tell us a bit about these photos you chose.

I find there’s nothing more romantic, or maybe bittersweet, than the horizon. It’s truly fascinating, albeit painfully never in reach. I don’t often take photographs of people; I’ve not mastered how to really use them in a scene, and I like the honesty and simplicity of a space that has no one in it, it makes sense to me.

Share your top locations for shooting in your town.

I’ve always loved the aesthetic of a sand dune! One of my favourite places is a stretch of beach running from our local harbour, sand dunes and dusty grasses, it’s just beautiful! Any point in view of the horizon however is for me a photograph waiting to happen, there just seems to be so many possible interpretations of such a simple line!

In London the South Bank is wonderful, the Hayward gallery in particular. Chelsea and Notting Hill have some great scenes too, immaculate architecture and everything placed with precision. It’s inspiring!

If you were to invent a new film camera what would it do?

I would’ve said a medium format LC-A though you’ve already gone and made it! A LomoKino with a higher frame rate would be quite incredible! (Please?!)

I never though of the Horizon as being melancholic before, I always thought of a place you are always trying to get to but never reach, which is a fairly melancholy way to look at it. Thanks for putting my thoughts into one word and I like your work
